Satya Narayan Katha

A popular and auspicious Puja performed for prosperity, peace, and fulfillment of desires.

The Satyanarayan Katha is a Hindu fasting story based on the Satyanarayana form of Lord Vishnu. This story is performed to bring happiness, prosperity, and children to the family, and is often recited or heard on full moon days or other auspicious occasions. The story conveys the message that following one's vows and not disrespecting the Lord's offerings brings happiness and prosperity to the devotee, while breaking one's vows leads to suffering.

Essence of the story

Beginning: The story begins with 88,000 sages asking Sutaji for a simple solution to salvation in Kaliyuga.
Narada Muni and the Poor Brahmin: Narada Muni saw a poor Brahmin wandering on earth, hungry and thirsty. Lord Hari, taking the form of an old Brahmin, advised him to observe the Satyanarayan Vrat. The poor Brahmin then observed the fast.
The Sage and the King: A varnik (merchant) sage saw a king observing the Satyanarayan fast and asked him about the story. The king explained that the fast was for the birth of a child, after which the sage also observed the fast and his wish was fulfilled.
Failure to follow through on a vow: The story tells that those who observed the Satyanarayan fast but later forgot their vows to the deity or disrespected the offerings suffered various hardships and losses. When they acknowledged their mistake and performed the Puja again according to the prescribed rituals, their lives were restored to happiness.
Attainment of the fruit: This story teaches that those who observe Satyanarayan Vrat with complete devotion, get wealth, happiness of children and desired results, and finally they go to Vaikunthdham.
