Wedding (Vivah Sanskar)

A sacred union performed with Vedic rituals, symbolizing the spiritual and emotional bond between two souls.

Vivah Sanskar is the English term for a Hindu wedding ceremony, a sacred rite of passage that signifies the union of two souls and the start of the Grihastha Ashrama (household stage of life). It is the 15th of 16 major Sanskars or sacraments, where the couple commits to a lifelong partnership to fulfill their duties (Dharma), prosperity (Artha), desires (Kama), and seek liberation (Moksha). The elaborate ceremony involves various rituals, like exchanging garlands (Jayamaala), taking vows around a sacred fire (Agni), and blessings from families and priests.

Key aspects of Vivah Sanskar:

A sacred union: It is not just a social contract but a sacred bond that creates a new family unit and is often symbolized as the union of Vishnu and Lakshmi.
Rituals: The ceremony includes many specific rituals that vary by region and community, such as the Jayamaala (exchange of garlands), the Kanyadan (giving away the bride), and the Saptapadi (seven vows) around the sacred fire.
Goals: The union is intended to help the couple fulfill the four goals of human life: Dharma (righteous duty), Artha (material well-being), Kama (desire), and Moksha (liberation).
Symbolism: Every ritual is rich in symbolism, from the welcoming of the groom's family to the sacred vows, all designed to create a strong and lasting bond between the couple and their families.
Transition: The Vivah Sanskar marks a major transition in life, moving from the student (Brahmacharya) stage to the household stage, with new responsibilities to the family and society.
